History - Knowledge and Understanding of the World

The modern world hides the secrets of prehistory, echo's the achievements of ancient civilisations and is shaped by the changes of power throughout the middle ages, both British and world wide. We cannot appreciate today without knowledge of the past. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

At Stanton in Peak, we have curated a curriculum that immerses children with the knowledge of key concepts in history, equips them with skills of perceptive thinking, thoughtful questioning of evidence and artefacts, and the confidence to critically analyse historical interpretation. We believe these skills will inspire curiosity and fascination that will remain with our pupils for the rest of their lives. As the world advances their knowledge and understanding should grow with it.

Across the year groups our progression plan ensures we introduce a variety of learning in relation to significant people and periods of the past, historical concepts, chronology and methods of enquiry intrinsic to our understanding of the past and the modern world in which we live and interlink this with skills of critical analyse and comparison

Please look at our progression map to find out more about how we build and develop skills and knowledge through the National Curriculum's areas of study.

Please contact Miss Birkin (paris.birkin@stanton-in-peak.derbyshire.sch.uk) if you have questions or would like to talk about any aspects of History at Stanton-in-Peak.

"Things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done." (Psalms 78:3-4)
