Building Effective Relationships Together (BERT) Award

We are proud to announce that we have achieved the Bronze BERT Award. Part of the work towards the award has been further developing our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) provision, further developing positive relationships in the school community and reducing stigma around asking for help and support on sensitive issues, such as puberty, body image and online friendships. We feel very strongly that when children have good friendships and connections with others, it supports their safety, mental health and wellbeing. This then has a positive impact on their ability to take part in lessons and to achieve well in their learning.

PSHE& RSE

Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) and  Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSE) gives pupils the knowledge and understanding, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and understand the changes that will happen to them as they grow.  Relationships and sex education is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. 

We believe it is essential that children are provided with age-appropriate information to assist them in making sensible choices and developing respect for themselves and others as they progress through the school. It is part of our safeguarding offer and it is essential that our children understand RSE so that they can help keep themselves safe now and in later life.

It helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need for later life. PSHE and RSE contribute to schools' statutory duties outlined in the Education Act 2002 and the Academies Act 2020 to provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum and is essential to Ofsted judgements in relation to personal development, behaviour and attitudes, and safeguarding.

The relationships and health aspects of PSHE education (RSE) became compulsory in all schools from 2020. At Peak Tor Federation PSHE & RSE is firmly based on the needs of our pupils and the community. This helps to ensure pupils get the learning they need when they need it; that it is age appropriate, accessible, relevant and meaningful to their lives, PSHE & RSE is an integral part of our ethos and is developed through a whole school approach. 

Parents are able to withdraw their child from primary school classes which address sex education (but not Relationships or Health Education lessons). A letter will be sent home to inform you when your child will be receiving Sex education along with details of what will be taught.

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is enriched in a variety of ways such as first aid courses, internet safety week, mental health week and anti bullying week. We also teach values such as kindness, respect, courage, resilience through Collective Worship and our daily lives. There are links between other subjects and PSHE/RSE. For example, termly Collective Worships around Safeguarding, ICT lessons on online safety, healthy lifestyle and mental wellbeing are taught in through Forest Schools and PE.
