Reading

A love of reading is the biggest indicator of future academic success.

OECD (The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)

Here at Stanton-in-Peak we understand the importance of reading. Your children's reading skills will be of great benefit to them across the entire curriculum and beyond. As such, we have planned a well-rounded reading curriculum that will inspire your children as well as teaching fluency, comprehension and prosody.

Our Reading curriculum

English Lessons

EYFS, key stage one and two both base their English work around high quality texts taken from the CLPE English scheme of learning. The amazing books we use help us to enable a progressive curriculum which covers a range of exciting genres. These engaging books help our pupils make links and build upon their previous learning.

Reading Practice

EYFS and Year 1

The children will read a book that is matched to their phonic knowledge in school three times before taking it home to read fluently. They will first read the book for fluency and word reading before reading it for prosody and comprehension.

Year 2 KS2

Once your child has completed the phonics programme they will be able to pick their own reading book from our carefully curated collections of ability appropriate books. Their reading will be assessed termly to ensure that they are choosing books from the appropriate collection. The assessment will focus on word reading, pace and comprehension.

Reading at home

Supporting your child with reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:

A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.

A sharing book.  Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Reading practice book

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Sharing book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

Reader's Theatre

Children that no longer require phonics will take part in reader's theatre sessions three times per week. Reader’s theatre is a strategy for developing reading fluency and prosody. It involves children rehearsing and performing a range of texts focusing on their delivery. It is fun, motivating and helps to build confidence.

Class Texts

Children at Stanton-in Peak are read to daily during class sessions. These provide the children with an opportunity to listen to and engage with high quality, progressive texts across a range of genres.
